An 85th minute goal from Friday Kalu was all that Orient Football Club of Okota needed to beat fancied Chideck Football Club in the group match of the ongoing Shallom Champions Cup.
In the encounter watched by a scanty crowd at the Jakande Estate Sports Centre, Oke Afa Isolo, both teams gave a good account of themselves as Chideck had an upper hand to seal the game in the first half.
Kalu became a match hero when he scored at the close range to silent the vociferous fans of Chideck towards the tail end of the game.
Speaking with GSG after the match, Kalu said he was happy scoring the only goal of the match that earned his team three points and promised to score more goals in their subsequent matches.
“My goal was a collective effort of the team but I am happy that I scored a crucial goal for my club. I promise to score two goals in our next match because I want to win the highest goal scorer of the tournament,†he said.
Orient Coach, Arthur Madueme, expressed satisfaction with the team’s victory saying that his team have what it takes to go far in the tournament. He warned his team to remain focused and go for victory in their next match.
“We played good football today (Saturday) if we can continue like this, we can go far in the tournament.
Reacting, Chideck Coach, Chinedu Okoli, said the defeat is a wake up call and has charged his players to win their remaining matches in order to qualify for the next stage.
“We dictated the pace of the game but we were unlucky not to have converted our chances. It was a big lesson for us and we must work hard to win our next match to keep our hope alive,†he said.
