Detectives at the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria are interrogating a prison warder for the alleged murder of a casual labourer at the Apapa Port, Mr. Akinboye Meinkemi, 28.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Akinyemi was alleged to have stabbed the deceased in the chest with his service knife after a disagreement.

Detectives at Panti confirmed to P.M.NEWS that the matter was transferred to them yesterday from the Kirikiri Police Division, Apapa, Lagos.

Investigations revealed that the deceased who lived at 5, Otun Street, Kirikiri town, Lagos went to a relaxation spot at Igbekai Waterside on Sallah day to relax where he met the suspect.

The waterfront is a popular joint in the area for relaxation.

An argument was said to have started between them over ownership of a chair during which they exchanged blows.

In the heat of the scuffle, the suspect reportedly removed his bionet from his trouser pocket and stabbed the deceased twice on the left side of the chest, near the heart.

The deceased, it was learnt, fell to the floor while the suspect fled. He was, however, arrested by other picknickers who beat him to a pulp. He was saved by the timely intervention of some policemen patrolling the area.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the deceased was rushed to a medical centre at Kirikiri town but died before the medical doctor who demanded for N30,000 as deposit before they could treat him.

“He had lost so much blood as a result of the insistence of the doctor to collect N30,000 deposit before anything can be done for him,” a  senior brother of the deceased, Mr. Tarelade Meinkemi, told P.M.NEWS at their residence in Kirikiri town.

The corpse of the slain casual labourer is at the Navy Town Hospital, Kirikiri, Apapa, pending medical examination on the cause of death.

P.M.NEWS also gathered that the suspect was working in Ondo Prison but on course at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons in Lagos.
