Nigerians have been urged to teach their children and wards the value of their local languages and save such from going into extinction.
Dr. Fred Odutola, the General Secretary and Chief Executive officer, Bible Society of Nigeria, gave the charge during the launching of Gong News magazine and the Gong Merit Awards for African heritage in Lagos recently.
Odutola said, “Charity begins at home, let the mother tongue be the first language our children will speak.
“We cannot continue to have English and French and killing our own mother tongue.
“It is shameful to see our children not able to speak our languages. I therefore challenge every parents to speak the mother tongue to their children at home before they go to school and anytime they are at home.â€
The publisher of the magazine, Mr. Nicholas Ehimatie, said the publication is aimed at leading the crusade for redeeming, promoting and celebrating the African cultural heritage.
He called on leaders in various positions of authority to see our cultural heritage as the basis for sustainable development.
