The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) recently met with students and journalists to discuss the strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, which has been on for the past three months.

The National Coordinator of ERC, Mr. Taiwo Hassan Soweto, spoke on how the higher institutions had been shut because the state governments could not meet the needs of the union. According to him, “so far, this strike has led to the closure of state-owned institutions in Lagos State. We have the Lagos State University, LASPOTECH, Michael Otedola College of Education and Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education.

“Others are Abia State University (ABSU), Anambra State University, Ebonyi State University, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Imo State University, Rivers State University of Education, Cross River University of Technology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, Tai Solarin University of Education and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Oyo State have also been closed due to a similar strike by the staff unions in these state institutions,” he added.

The activist therefore urged the students, parents, the labour unions to rise and protest this absurdity. “We call on the students’ unions and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to wake up from their slumber and take the initiative to organize solidarity marches to back up the struggle of ASUU.
