Officials of Alimosho Local Government Health have dragged schools to the Igando Ikotun Grade ‘B’ Customary Court for not providing a well equipped sick bay for their pupils.
One of the schools, Stargate School, located at 21B, Kola Arowale Street, Awida, was represented by its proprietor, Mr. Kolawole Ogunmola, in the court.
The prosecutor, Absalam N.A, made a six-count charge against the school which include, failure to provide sanitary and modern toilet facilities, failure to provide sick bay for its pupils, failuer to provide fire extinguisher as well as contempt of court.
Also, when the health officials went to the school on Tuesday morning, they were denied entrance into the school and this was punishable under Section 27 of Environmental Sanitation Law, 2000 of Lagos State which stipulates a fine or 3 months imprisonment for any obstruction.
The accused pleaded guilty, and said an adequate sick bay has been made available and efforts are being made to eliminate the nuisances.
Hopewell school located at 5/7, Adeyinka Street, Off Pabbus stop, Ikotun was also arraigned before the court for not providing a sick bay, failure to clean cobwebs in the classrooms, failure to dispose refuse properly and to cut the overgrown weeds around the flower beds as well as contempt of court.
The magistrate who presided over the two cases fined the schools, saying failure to pay the fines will lead to imprisonment of the proprietor and the head teacher that represented the schools for six months. He adjourned the case till 18 January, 2011.
