A division of the Appeal Court for Benue and Nasarawa states is to begin sitting in Makurdi on 7 January, 2011.
This was disclosed to newsmen at Government House, Makurdi, by Justice Isa Ayo Salami, President Court of Appeal, who after a tour of facilities provided by the state government for the court for the take off of the court, expressed happiness with what he saw so far.
Accompanied on the inspection by the presiding Judge, Court of Appeal, Abuja, Justice Mohammed Garba; Justice Monica Vincent of Jos Division and other justices of the Court of Appeal, the Justice Salami further hinted that he had already appointed three justices to man the Makurdi Division.
He praised Governor Gabriel Suswam for providing a conducive atmosphere for the anticipated take-off of the court.
The governor, who was represented by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Chive Kaave, thanked Justice Salami for giving approval for the citing of the court in the state, assuring that government will give every assistance needed for the successful operation of the court.
Kaave noted that the establishment of the Appeal Court in Benue will reduce the trauma suffered by litigants and their clients travelling to Jos for their cases.
Among the facilities in the court are a befitting court room and four-bedroom flat accommodation for the resident judges.
