The 42nd Asoju-Oba Table Tennis Championship served off at the Molade Okoya Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria today.
After concluding registration formalities yesterday, the players got down to serious business with the preliminary matches.
P.M.Sports gathered that over 200 players registered to participate in the tournament, which will end on Friday.
The tournament’s Chief Referee, John Peters, disclosed that this year’s tourney attracted a huge number of ping pongers because there is lack of table tennis tournaments in the country this year.
Peters, who doubles as the technical committee chairman of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, said two professional table tennis players, Tajudeen Salawu, who lost to Gbenga Anthony in last year’s edition and Atinuke Olaide, winner of the Women’s Singles will take part in the tourney.
The former champion, Lanre Jegede, who plays professional table tennis in France has pulled out of the competition to pave way for upcoming players to feature in the competition.Tolu Durosimi- Etti, has also pulled out of the event on health ground.
