Robbery Suspect Electrocuted

By Paul Iyoghojie

A member of a four-man gang of suspected robbers  identified as Ibrahim who broke into a house at Oniru Estate area of Victoria Island, Lagos has been  electrocuted.

The suspect, it was gathered, got electrocuted  while trying to escape arrest by the police who came to the area after a distress call.

The incident happened on Boxing Day, at Land Bridge Avenue, Oniru Estate, Maroko, Victoria Island, Lagos, South West Nigeria.

P.M.NEWS gathered from a resident of the estate that the four-man gang came to the street around 2 a.m. and jumped into one of the buildings to rob, but  unknown to them, a neighbour opposite the building saw them.

Investigations revealed that while the suspects  were making frantic efforts to enter the building whose owner had travelled for the yuletide, the neighbour  called the police and a patrol team swiftly arrived the scene. On sighting the police, three of the suspects jumped in to the adjoining compound and escaped,  while the fourth, Ibrahim, who was already on top of the balcony of the duplex could not escape.

In an attempt to escape,  he mistakenly cut a  live wire beside the building and was electrocuted.

The incident threw  residents into confussion.

With the help of policemen, the residents invited officials of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN to put off  electricity supply to the area to prevent  fire outbreak, as smoke was coming out of the body of the suspect.

The PHCN officials arrived  the scene and put off the light before removing the corpse of the suspect to the nearest police station from where it was taken  to the  Isolo General Hospital.

Items recovered from him include a knife and a torchlight.

When P.M.NEWS visited the Maroko Police Division to see the Divisional Police Officer for comment on the incident, he was said to have gone out, but a police  source confirmed it.
