Price Of Bread Goes Up Next Week

By Oluwole Adeboye

The National President of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, AMBCN, Chief Bayo Folarin, has disclosed that the price of bread will be  increased by 10 percent as from 15 January, 2011.

Folarin disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the association’s headquarters in Lagos.

“It is pertinent to inform bread consumers before the price increase because bread serves as a staple food for majority of Nigerians. Reason for the price  has to do with the continual price increase in baking ingredients, hence we have no option than to increase price of bread by adding 10 percent to the  current price, if we are to remain in business.

“It is worthy to intimate the general public that the price of a bag of sugar has risen from N7,200 to N10,500 and bag of flour from N4,900 to N5,600. Prices  of other baking ingredients have also gone up,” he stated.

He said bakers recognise the role the federal government could play to cushion the effect of the high cost of bread production on the populace, hence, they  are appealing to the government to act withpout delay.

“If nothing is done before the end of March 2011, we may again be forced to increase the price of bread. I hereby give directive to all state chairmen of the  association in the country to coordinate their members in their respective states for immediate implementation.

“I want to refer to the meeting held with the then Vice President, now President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, where it was  agreed that all tariffs should be removed from imported baking materials,” he stated.
