Conductor Bags A Month Imprisonment For Theft
AÂ 19-year-old bus conductor was on Tuesday sentenced to one month imprisonment for allegedly stealing from a youth corper.
The convict, Gabriel Ileso, was given an option of N1,000 fine after his guilty plea before a Karu Magistrate’s Court.
The Police Prosecutor, Jerry Tangshak, had told the court that the convict with three others now at large on Dec. 31, 2010, formed common intention and apprehended one Samuel Ibilaye, a corp member. Tangshak told the court that the convict collected the corper’s wallet containing his identification card , MTN and ZAIN Sim cards and the sum of N5,000.
He said the convict was however, arrested at Nyanya Tipper Garage on Jan. 1 while the wallet with N1,500 was recovered from him.
He said the offence of joint act and theft committed by the convict contravened sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code Law, respectively.
The convict who pleaded guilty to the charge pleaded for leniency, saying that he would not commit the offence again, pleading with the complainant for leniency.
The Prosecutor, however, urged the court to try the convict summarily pursuant to section 157(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) and applied for compensation of N4,200 to be paid to the complainant.
Magistrate Nkwadimi Buba, however, sentenced him to one month imprisonment and ordered that the compensation applied for by the prosecutor should be paid by the convict.
