RESUMPTION DATE: Lagos Appeals To Parents
The Lagos state Government has reacted to notices issued by the Federal Ministry of Education directing all schools to remain closed during the period of the voters registration exercise and in effect postponing the scheduled resumption date of schools which should have commenced tomorrow the 10th of January 2011.
It said in statement today that while it believes that the right to vote should not jeopardize the right to full and qualitative education, it appeals to Parents, Guardians, Teachers and in particular the Students for their understanding and announces the postponement of resumption from the 10th of January 2011 to 31st of January 2011 which will be one week shorter than the earlier announced date of 4th February 2011.
“The Government’s position is predicated on the fact that not less than 265 schools will be involved in the exercise as proposed by the Independent NationaI Electoral Commission (lNEC); and more importantly we feel that any distraction that the exercise may cause during school period will not be in the best interest of the students and other stakeholders in the education sector.
“The State Government assures the citizenry and all stakeholders of its commitment to ensure that the quality of education and training of the students will not be affected by this postponement of the resumption date.
Students of Senior Secondary School in year 3(three) level are exempted from this notice of postponement and are expected to resume on the 10th January 2011 as scheduled to enable them prepare for their examination by completing their syllabus work.
“The State Government expresses its appreciation to all citizens and stakeholders for their cooperation and understanding and uses this medium to implore all citizens and residents to take full benefit of the voters registration exercise to ensure that everybody that is 18 years old and above is registered and eligible to vote at the forthcoming general elections.
