Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, South West Nigeria, has recruited top Nollywood stars to spearhead the mobilisation of Lagosians to turn out  enmasse for the forthcoming voters’ registration exercise.

The Nollywood stars would be led by Mr. Segun Arinze and Kunle Afolayan and would engage in sensitising Lagosians on the need to register during the  exercise.

Fashola disclosed this yesterday while flagging off the voters’ registration exercise at the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Lagos Secretariat, Acme Road,  Ogba, Lagos.

According to Fashola, the Nollywood stars had been recruited to sensitise Lagosians on the importance of the exercise, saying the actors would also appear  on paid and sponsored shows to enlighten the people.

Over 1, 000 ACN supporters had gathered at the secretariat for the official flag-off of the voters’ campaign registration exercise, while thousands also  gathered at the Lagos Television Ground for the same purpose.

They included local government party chairmen and council bosses; political office seekers, including wife of the party leader and former state governor,  Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, some members of the state executive council and politicians, traditional rulers, among others.

According to Fashola, the campaign was another statement by the state to “lead this crusade because we want to be the touch bearers of good governance.”

Also, the governor was screened and cleared by the ACN screening committee yesterday to ascertain if he was qualified to contest the coming poll under the  banner of the party.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative and Political Powers Bureau, Alhaji Abdulateef Abdulakeem reminded the supporters that the voters’  registration exercise was an important exercise to ensure credible polls, adding that the state was the first to flag off such campaign in the country.

Earlier, Lagos ACN Chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale disclosed that former Benue State Governor, George Akume and 24 other Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  stalwarts in Benue would soon decamp to the ACN.

He said the ACN had become the darling of many Nigerians as many had been disappointed by the ruling PDP at all levels, adding that the ACN was collaborating  with other progressive parties to wrest power from the PDP in the presidential elections.
