CPC Takes Measures Against Thuggery

The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) said on Tuesday that the candidacy of any of its aspirants who engaged in money politics would be cancelled or  withdrawn.

Prince Tony Momoh, the party’s newly elected National Chairman, stated this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Momoh in the statement also said that the use of thugs to influence voting or to announce unauthorised results of the party’s ongoing primaries by party  officials would no longer be tolerated.

He advised party faithful to eschew actions that would be capable of attracting disciplinary action against them, adding that officials caught in unwholesome  activities would be expelled.

He said that the untoward attitude of some of the party’s aspirants and members “ if not quickly addressed will impact negatively on the image of the party  nationwide.”

He listed the unwholesome attitude as the use of thugs to intimidate, maim, harm or incapacitate opponents or party officials sent to states to conduct  congresses or primary elections.

He also listed the open use of money to buy over delegates or party members to influence voting against Electoral Act 2010 and party guidelines as well as  the unauthorised announcement of results of primaries.

The statement quoted him as saying that “any aspirant that uses money or thugs to influence voting or announces unauthorised results in contravention of our  party guidelines and electoral law will have his candidacy cancelled or withdrawn.”

NAN reports that Momoh contested the party’s chairmanship position with Mrs. Joi Okunnu at its just concluded national convention in Abuja.

He got a total of 1,936 votes from the 4,123 delegates that were eligible to vote at the convention to replace Mr. Oscar Udoji, the party’s interim chairman.
