CAFON Holds Forum on Power Reforms

The Consumer Advocacy Forum of Nigeria, (CAFON) will on Tuesday next week hold a forum with stakeholders to discuss the current reform in the power sector.

In a statement by the programmme’s officer of the group, Miss Abiola Yahaya, said this edition of the forum will be used to evaluate the ubiquitous consumer issues ranging from inadequacies in service delivery, lack of safe and stable power supply, exorbitant and unjustifiable billing and disconnections, poor quality transformers and lack of maintenance, poor customer care, lack of access to a breakdown of monthly electricity bills for pre-paid customers amongst others.

Part of the statement reads;”At the end of this coming forum, we hope to evaluate the consumer rights in power sector services as well as follow-up on the progress made by service providers since the last power sector reform in January/July 2010, while seeking solutions to other issues affecting consumers in the power sector.

“The forum will also create an avenue for consumers, service providers, regulators, legal and sector consultants to connect with a view to enlightening, empowering and resolving these issues as much as possible.

As part of our media advocacy to give the Nigerian consumer a voice, we are partnering with Lagos television to create a public platform to draw attention to consumer rights violation. The forum will also empower consumers on how to protect themselves from further exploitations while providing them with option for redress.

The statement also noted that consumers who at some point in time have been victims of unsatisfactory services will enjoy free counsel from lawyers, representatives of the regulatory body and the service providers.
