Pharmacist Condemns Early Marriages

A pharmacist, Amaka Onwukwe, has highlighted the dangers of early marriages and warned young girls to be well prepared before going into marriage.

Speaking on early marriages  at a birthday party, Onwukwe described how a Muslim friend of hers told her how she was forced into early marriage by her parents.

She also recalled how former Zamfara State governor and now a senator of the Federal Republic, Ahmed Sanni, married a 13-year old Egyptian girl.

Onwukwe said: “Islam is said to be a religion of peace, if that is true, how can girls between 10 and 13 years old be thrown into marriage. Such a girl can never know peace. How can any religion support such an act. How can a one-time governor and a serving lawmaker take a 13-year old for a wife.

“This is slavery to the women folk. The different women organization should rise up to this challenge and fight this inhuman act.

“Nigeria, being a secular state should not be turned into a field where different unimaginable things are planted, watered and allowed to grow to maturity.

“What is bad in the sight of the people is bad in the sight of God. That is why at each given opportunity, I do not close my eyes to speak against it.

”Those who are supposed to protect the young girls are the ones marrying them. This calls for national concern and must not be swept under the carpet.

“Despite the threat to my life, I still deemed it necessary to persist on my just cause. I have been directly and indirectly subjected to some inhuman treatment at different times because of this campaign but I will not be deterred because it is bad,”  she concluded.
