Passenger Threatens To Sue Arik Air Over Compensation

For being stranded for 15 hours at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, South-West Nigeria, a passenger with Arik Air has threatened to go to court unless she is compensated by the airline.

P.M.NEWS learnt that Mrs. Idowu Zaina Bolanle, who lives in South Africa, had purchased three return tickets for herself and her two children from Arik Air for a flight scheduled for Monday 4 January 2011 at 11 pm, but it was not until 2 pm the next day that the flight left.

Since the incident, Bolanle has been at loggerheads with the airline, demanding compensation.

Arik Air’s spokesman, Mr. Banji Ola, told P.M.NEWS early today that the airline will not compensate the complainant because it delayed the flight for safety reasons.

He said: “The aircraft that was scheduled to fly the passengers to Jo’burg that night had a technical problem and since we don’t compromise the safety of our passengers, the flight had to be delayed for a few hours.

“We emphasise safety at Arik Air all the times. There is no basis for compensation in this case.”

According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, passengers must be compensated when the aircraft is faulty.
