Murder: Lawmaker Thanks God For His Release
Hon. Ekong Sampson, member for Mkpat Enin State Constituency in Akwa Ibom, says he has been exonerated in the murder of Dr. Joseph Akpan-Akpudo, a PDP House of Representatives aspirant.
Sampson and Rep. Bernard Udo of Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, were arrested along with the Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government, Akparawa Mfon Nkanteen, and the Secretary of the Council, Mr. Ubong Inyang.
Others arrested with them were the Leader of the Council, Hon. Udobong, and a former Vice-Chairman of the local government, Mr. Imowo Udobia.
Sampson told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Mpkat Enin, Akwa Ibom, on Sunday that the principal suspects had exonerated him through their statements.
He expressed gratitude to his supporters and associates for their solidarity and prayers during the period of his detention, saying that the experience was part of his sacrifice for the development of Mkpat Enin.
Sampson said there was no cause for alarm, adding: “My hands are clean and I thank God and the people for standing solidly behind me during the trials, most especially, as the truth has finally come out.â€
He said he had forgiven his detractors, who allegedly accused him falsely and added that the incident had emboldened him to do more for Mkpat Enin to enable it to be a stronger and united constituency.
Sampson said his experience in detention enabled him to appreciate the need for a reform of the justice system to avoid punishments for innocent persons.
NAN recalls that the legislators were detained for three weeks over the murder and released after the arrest of six suspects, who allegedly claimed responsibility for the crime.
