Corps Members Shelve Boycott
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Lagos on Monday shelved their proposed plan to boycott the ongoing voters’ registration exercise over non-payment of their allowances.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) which monitored the situation in some of the affected areas, reports that the corps members reported to their duty posts to continue the exercise.
One of the corps members, Emmanuel Samuel told NAN that they shelved the boycott following assurances by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) that they would be paid the money within the week.
He said: “As you can see, we are doing our jobs here because we have been told that we will be paid the N5,600 transport and feeding allowance before the end of the week.
“So, we are waiting for INEC to keep to its promises. For now, every corps member has returned to his or her duty post.â€
NAN had reported on Sunday that the corps members might boycott the exercise to press home their demands for payment of their allowances by INEC.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tolagbe Animashaun, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Lagos Central Senatorial District has called for the extension of the exercise to enable more eligible voters to be registered.
Animashaun urged INEC to create additional centres for registration in order to expedite the registration process.
“Not all eligible voters in Lagos State have registered because of the slow pace of the exercise. In Apapa, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland and Surulere, we have been having this same problem.
“However, if additional centres are to be created, INEC officials in Lagos should sensitise other party members and not just the members of the ruling party,†he said.
