NURTW Member Charged With Rape
An official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Laja Lasisi, 34, was yesterday docked at the Ogudu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on a five-count charge of attempted rape and touching a woman’s breast and assault.
Police prosecutor, ASP Eyo Owai, told the court that Lasisi attempted to rape one Peace Bassey, 19, at about 2 p.m. on 22 January, 2011 at 25, Yisa Omotunde Street, Alapere, near Ketu, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.
The charge sheet added that on the same day, time and place, the defendant assaulted Peace Bassey by touching her breasts, gave blow to one Loveth Linu, wilfully and maliciously damaged a clothe valued at N4,000, property of Loveth Linus and also assaulted Austin Linus by giving him blow on his face.
According to the police, the offences are punishable under Sections 359, 360, 51, 451 and 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap.17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
When the charges were read to the accused, who does not understand English, he pleaded guilty. But on a second thought, he changed his plea to not guilty.
The presiding magistrate, Mrs. B. F. Williams admitted him on bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till 14 February, 2011 for mention.
