Cross River Gets 400 New DDC Machines

INEC in Cross-River has received additional 400 Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines  for the on-going voter registration exercise.

The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mike Igini, told newsmen on  Thursday in Calabar, that 2,055 machines had earlier been distributed across the  state.

Igini said the commission had commenced the distribution of the new machines to  local government areas to replace those that were faulty.

Reacting to the sympathy strike by corps members over the arrest of five of their  colleagues in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Igini said the arrested corps members  were charged under the Electoral Act 2010.

Igini said the five corps members, who were accused of diverting registration  materials, had been arraigned in court.

He, however, said the commission had deployed INEC officials to complete the voter  registration exercise in Akpabuyo while a monitoring team had been put in place.

Igini expressed optimism that the exercise would be extended, saying this was “ in  line with the Section 9 and 5 of the 2010 Electoral Act.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there are 283 polling units in the  state.
