Insurance ’ll Bounce Back, Says Bazuaye
Bendel Insurance legend, Baldwin Bazuaye expects a renaissance at his old club following their relegation to the second tier of Nigerian football.
Insurance, fondly referred to as Benin Arsenal, because of their attractive style previously held the record of being the only Nigerian club never to have been relegated from the top flight.
They saw that proud bit of history obliterated following their relegation at the end of the 2007/2008 season because of a management dispute over who controlled the team.
The 42 year old Bazuaye who spent close to a decade at the club before joining Greek side, Ethnikos Piraeus in 1992, says there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.
“Things have changed for the better. The present management of the club led by Igbinowanhia Ekhousuehi, is composed of men who understand how the game should be played at the highest level.
“I am also a part of the administrative set up of the club alongside Roland Ewere, another ex player of the club, so I think we are heading towards the right direction,†Bazuaye told SuperSport.com.
Insurance have made a shaky start to the 2010/2011 season with two wins and five defeats after their first seven games but Bazuaye, who previously played for Concord and 3SC in the Nigerian League is certain the club will soon return to their winning ways.
“It is very early into the season. We will bounce back. Our first objective is to qualify for the Premier League and other things will fall into place,†he said.
Insurance of Benin Football Club were one of the founders of the Nigerian Premier League in 1972. They won the domestic title twice in 1973 and 1979, the Nigerian Cup on three occasions; 1972, 1978 and 1980 and three WAFU Cup titles in1993, 1994 and 1995.
