Traffic Authority Dismisses 40
Mr Nelson Jaja, the Controller-General, Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority, said 40 of its personnel were sacked last year for offences bordering on corruption.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that the management of the authority had zero tolerance for corruption.
He said the dismissed staff were either caught in the act or had been involved in such acts for a period of time undetected.
Jaja warned that the authority would not hesitate to fire and discipline erring staff who engaged in practices that contravened the laws setting up the body.
The controller-general said a total of N100 million that was realised as fines from traffic violators had been paid into the coffers of the state government.
He said the law setting up the authority empowered it to prosecute or fine traffic offenders.
He said when it began operation in 2009, the traffic situation in Port Harcourt was chaotic because some motorists had no respect for traffic rules and regulations.
“We are happy to observe that things have started changing in the city. Sanity has started returning to our roads.
“Our officers and men in partnership with the police, road safety corps and other security agencies have been working hard to bring sanity to our roads.
“The chaotic scenes of the past are fast disappearing and we intend to make it remain so,†Jaja said.
He said if funds were available, more officers and men would be recruited to man the roads in Port Harcourt city and other towns in the state.
