OAU Students Protest
Students’ Union leaders and the management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, are at loggerheads over the increment of the school fees this new session.
Campus Square learnt that the freshers’ acceptance fee has been raised from N2,000 to N20,000. Though the school fees of returning students was not increased, a new levy called Health Insurance Scheme was added to it.
Reacting to the increment, a 300-Level student of Geology, Jonah Olaogun, urged his mates to “let sleeping dogs lie because “the fight is a lost battle”, adding thet new students have paid.â€
The union president, Joel Fredrick, however, has a different opinion. “We asked banks on campus not to conduct any transaction. We are not fighting for nothing. We are fighting based on the fact that an increment from N2,000 to N20,000 is callous. Let us consider students who will be forced to forfeit their admission because their parents cannot afford the school fees.
OAU now has the highest acceptance fee, while UnIbadan, Unilag and others may want to do the same next year. They said it is not our business as they are not yet students of the institution. Does our culture not teach us to love others as ourselves? Is the acceptance of their admission not automatic acceptance of the Students Union?â€
