Lawmaker Decries Nigeria’s Power Situation
A Lagos lawmaker, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, recently raised an alarm about the power situation in the country, lamenting that this had increased the cost of doing business in Nigeria resulting in job losses.
Agunbiade, who spoke at the Assembly complex said that companies are no longer able to break even or make profit due to the energy situation as most companies have to generate their own electricity.
The lawmaker said this was why many companies and business enterprises resorted to using casual workers just to keep afloat.
He cited the Lagos State Printing Corporation, whose workers protested to the Assembly complex recently over casualisation of staff and non-payment of staff salaries and allowances, as an example.
The lawmaker who is the ad-hoc Committee Chairman on Commerce and Industry, said though he was not justifying the casualisation of workers, the companies still provided employment for unemployed youths in the country.
He also promised that his committee would address the issue of casualisation of workers in the corporation if it was “duly assigned†the task by the Assembly.
“The House would ensure the workers are not shortchanged and that what is due to them is not with held,†Agunbiade said.
