Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Deserted

As the indefinite strike by medical and health workers in the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, entered its seventh day on Tuesday, its premises has remained deserted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited the hospital reports that all the patients earlier admitted in the hospital had been referred to other health facilities in the state.

Hospital security personnel guarding the wards and doctors were the only staff in the premises.

Adamu Sarki, the Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of Health Professionals (JACHP), told NAN that “all avenues for negotiation and amicable resolution of the dispute have proved abortive”.

He listed their grievances to include the move by the management to demote the health professionals by one grade level and the withdrawal of teaching allowance.

He further said the management had refused to pay the end-of-year bonus allegedly approved for federal civil servants by the federal government.

The chairman added that the management had also refused to provide a sick bay to cater for the health care needs of workers who may have to be admitted into the hospital for medical attention.

The workers also demanded for a parking space as reported cases of staff vehicles being stolen in the hospital were becoming rampant

Efforts by NAN to meet with the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Isa Gambo, or the public relations officer were not successful as the security man in the CMD‘s office simply said they were on strike.
