Adedoja Assures On Stadium Swimming Pool
Minister of Sports, Professor Taoreed Adedoja, has promised that the swimming pool at the National Stadium that has been abandoned for years will be renovated before 29 May, 2011.
Adedoja gave this assurance during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos State recently.
The newly appointed sports minister told P.M.Sports that the swimming pool needs to be renovated.
He said the swimming pool is in a very bad condition that swimmers cannot train there let alone the swimming  federation hosts national and international competitions.
“I have gone round to inspect the condition of sports facilities at the National Stadium. I must tell you that I am not impressed with the state of facilities there.
“The swimming pool is worse and it must be renovated before the new administration come on board on 29 May. I want to assure athletes and other stakeholders that the swimming pool will be completed in two months time,†he said.
The former basketball coach said there is no reason why Nigeria should not win medals in swimming event if swimming pools in all the federal stadiums are in good shape.
He said without a good swimming pool, Nigeria will continue to chase shadow at the swimming event in international meets.
“Swimming event carries more medals than any sports in any international competitions. If our swimming pools are in good condition, our swimmers especially those who come from the South-South of this country will excel in international competitions.
“I will be glad if Nigeria win more medals in swimming in the forthcoming All Africa Games,†said Adedoja, who vowed to change the face of sports before the end of his tenure on 29, May, this year.
