Plateau Assembly Not Under Ransom —Member
Mr. Emmanuel Jugul, Chairman of Plateau House of Assembly Committee on Information, says the inability of the House to sit has nothing to do with the defection of 14 legislators.
The legislators defected from PDP to Labour Party (LP) recently.
Jugul told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that it was untrue that the defected legislators had held the entire Assembly to ransom by sabotaging its efforts to hold plenary sessions.
“We were elected by our constituents to work for their interest and that is exactly what we are doing.
“We do not have the capacity or power to stop the House from sitting in normal circumstances. Once we are called to come and sit, we will humbly do so,†Jugul explained.
He said all the legislators were still genuine members of the Assembly, ready to perform their legislative functions with zeal.
“The Speaker is the one who calls for the sitting and if he does not call, we cannot sit on our own,†he said.
Speculations were rife that the defected members refused to cooperate with the Speaker, in a bid to frustrate the passage of the 2011 budget.
