The Federal Government is set to commission the Onitsha port in Anambra State in February.

Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman,  stated this in Abuja recently  that the cargo handling equipment had arrived the country.

He explained that work was also going on other river ports except Lokoja port where there was litigation.

At the Onitsha port, vessels and barges are expected to start loading and offloading goods. The port would also create avenue for clearing and forwarding services.

The Onitsha port project was conceived and awarded in 1983, during the regime of President Shehu Shagari, but was abandoned midway and materials put in place then were were vandalised or  dilapidated.

Suleiman also said that the dredging of the River Niger from Warri to Jamata near Lokoja has been completed.
