School Sports: Principal Tasks Lagos Govt
Principal of Baptist Junior Secondary School, Obanikoro, Lagos State, Nigeria, Mrs Funke Fabunmi, has urged the state government to focus more on school sports.
Fabunmi made this appeal during the 6th annual Inter House Sports Competition of her school held on the playground of Baptist Academy, Obanikoro, Lagos State.
In a chat with P.M.Sports, the school principal said if the state government can develop and promote school sports, the state will discover young talents for the forthcoming National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Rivers State later in the year.
“I want to commend Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, for his contribution to sports development in the state. Sports development starts from schools and we want the government to provide more sports facilities in all the local government areas to enable schools participate in school sports competitions.
“I want the Lagos State Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Raji Fashola headed by Prince Wale Oladunjoye to organise inter school sports competitions monthly or quarterly so that more talents will be discovered,†she said.
Meanwhile, the defending champions, Blue House, retained their first position at the end of the one day competition. Purple House that came last in the last edition placed were second this year. Red house secured the third position, while Yellow were the last on the medal table.
Blue House’s Game Master, Olufemi Ajala, commended his team for their commitment and doggedness that saw them through to defend the title won last year.
“It was a sweet victory for us because nobody thought we could win it again. The secret of our success is hard work. My students trained regularly before this competition. We will continue to celebrate this victory throughout this second term,†he said.
Also speaking, the school’s Sports Officer, Yomi Odufuwa, expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the success of the school competition, saying the next edition will be more glamorous.
