AIICO Manager Charged With Certificate Fraud


A manager with AIICO Insurance in Lagos, Adetunji Joseph Abiodun has been charged to Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for certificate forgery.

The 41-year old manager at AIICO Insurance Company Plc., Victoria Island, Lagos, South-West Nigeria, was alleged to have forged two certificates of Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos where he claimed to have made his Higher National Diploma, HND, with upper credit.

Armed with the certificates, he was offered employment by AIICO Insurance Company where he rose to the level of a manager.

gathered that the management of the company discovered the forgery during the verification of its workers’ certificates.

During the verification, it was discovered that, Adetunji, allegedly forged the Ordinary National Diploma, OND, and the Higher National Diploma, HND, certificates which he used to secure employment.

Adetunji reportedly submitted OND/HND certificates with numbers YCT/HND/012550, YCT/ND/2649; Notification of result No. 304620190, 5th semester 1997/1998 and statement of examination number BAPN3F98, all discovered to be fake.

Investigating police officer, Sergeant Isah Adah of the Victoria Island Division of Nigeria Police proved that the certificates were falsified and forged.

The police arrested and charged him to court for forgery. The offence, according to police prosecutor, is contrary to section 516 and 467 of the Criminal Code Cap 17 Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

When the charge was read to Adetunji, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.J. Awope granted him bail in the sum of N250,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The court also ordered that the sureties must show evidence of their means of livelihood, payment of taxes while their addresses will be verified by the court orderly.

The matter has been adjourned till 5 March, 2011. The defendant was remanded in prison custody until he fulfils the bail conditions.
