Political Debates Will Help Voters Decide —Utomi
Professor Pat Okedinachi Utomi, the Presidential Candidate of the Social Democratic Mega Party, SDMP, has reacted to the call by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State for public debates by candidates of the various parties in which they would talk to the electorate about what they want to do for their people.
In a statement from his Victoria Island office yesterday, Utomi said that the wooing of the electorate with different and competing ideas, methods of implementation, personnel to do the implementation and other issues “ordinarily forms the essence of democracy in successful democracies of the world.â€
Governor Fashola, in a recent public debate with other gubernatorial candidates vying for the Alausa Roundhouse hot-seat, (the Lagos Governorship position) had opined that, even more than just clogging the airwaves and the media spots with meaningless jingles, candidates should square up to address the electorate with their ideas, programmes and plans of action. They should rigorously test out their ideas with the electorate and allow them to make rational decisions about their suitability for such offices.”
