Ambrose Alli University Shut Down

Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma has been shut down indefinitely after a riot by the students of the institution.

The students were said to have protested the hike in school fees and lack of water in their various hostels.

The students were paying a sum of N15,000 before it was increased to N55,000.

On Monday, 14 February 2011, the students embarked on a peaceful protest, during which they complained about the increase in school fees and lack of water.

The school authorities apologised to the students and brought in some water tanks instead of pumping water for them. On the next day, the student union president, Itote Damisa, was arrested when he went to complain to the governor of the state, Adams Oshiomhole, about the hike in their school fees but he was later released that afternoon.

However, when the registrar, Mrs. Ofure Omole, discovered this, she dissolved sack the student union president and his deputy, leaving the speaker to  act as president.

In the early hours of Thursday 17 February, the faculty of art burnt dorm due to electrical fault and they couldn’t put off the light because there was no water in the school which the students complained about.

The school authorities claimed it was the student who got the building burnt and this led to the riot by the students.

On that Thursday evening, the registrar has ordered the school to be lock down indefinitely.
