Robbery Suspect Remanded In Prison

A robbery suspect, David Edegba, 20 arrested by the police inside St. Mary Church, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos armed with a pistol after his failed attempt to rob worshippers on new year’s eve has been arraigned before the Ebute Metta Magistrate’s Court.

He was arrested by detectives who monitored his strange movement inside the church.

When searched, a locally made pistol was found on him. He confessed to the crime and was later arraigned before the court on a one-count charge of robbery, an offence contrary to Section 1 and punishable under Section 2 (3) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions), Cap. Vol. XX II, Laws of the Federation.

The one-count charge reads: ”That you, David Edegba, 27 and others at large on 1 January, 2011 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos in the Lagos magisterial district while armed with one locally made pistol did attempt to rob members while the church was in session.”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like sum. The magistrate directed that one of the sureties must either be on Level 10 in the Civil Service or a community leader and their addresses must be verified.

The matter has been adjourned till 11 March, 2011.

The accused was remanded in prison custody when he could not perfect the conditions attached to his bail.
