Handset Snatchers, Receiver In Police Net
The police at Orile division, Orile, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, have arrested two notorious phone snatchers at Doyin Bus Stop, Orile Iganmu and arraigned them in court along with the receiver of the stolen items.
The accused, identified as Balogun Ahmed and Agbekoya Fatai were arrested on 4Â February, 2010 following a distress call from victims that handset thieves were robbing them with cutlasses, knives and broken bottles.
Items recovered from them include a Samsung handset, valued at N14,000; one Nokia valued at N18,000 and 18 MTN, Airtel and Glo sim cards.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime and identified one Rasidi Jamiu as their receiver.
The police charge them and the receiver of the stolen phones before the Surulere Magistrate’s Court on an eight-count charge of felony, to wit, stealing, an offence punishable under sections 516, 390 (9), 430 and 427 of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol.11, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and the presiding magistrate, A.O. Sholadoye granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the matter till 2 March, 2011.
They were remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons, Apapa, when they could not perfect their bail conditions.
