Bode George Tasks Supporters On Jonathan’s Visit
Convicted People’s Democratic Party, PDP stalwart, Chief Olabode George, has urged his supporters to turn out enmasse tomorrow when President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan visits the state on a campaign tour.
George made this appeal while addressing party supporters who thronged his Lugard Street, Ikoyi home after the church service organised for him at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos at the weekend.
“I want our supporters to vibrate Lagos on Tuesday when the president comes to Lagos so that our opposition will think that it is Tsunami that has happened,” said the former Chairman of the Board of Nigeria Ports Authority, NPA.
He said though he was yet to be fully briefed about his party’s plans for the forthcoming elections, particularly as it affects Lagos, he expressed confidence that the PDP would wrest power from the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria.
The former vice chairman of PDP said the people of Lagos were tired of the policies of the ruling ACN and urged his party’s supporters to work hard and in harmony, to ensure they emerge victorious at the April polls in the state.
His house on Lugard Street, Ikoyi wore a new look as it was painted and renovated in preparation for his release from the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons after serving a two-year jail term for fraud.
It was merriment after the church service as party supporters who were at the service retired along with him to his house where they were later treated to food and drinks.
Some of the party faithful who thronged his house carried posters and banners, bearing his pictures and inscriptions like: Ologini t’ajode, Atono Oodua, Joseph of our time and Our great and true leader. The men were dressed in T-shirts on which his picture was embossed, while the women wore traditional attire made of Ankara fabric.
A musical band stationed in a corner of the premises dished out cool traditional Yoruba tunes to the delight of those present in his house to rejoice with him.
Chief George and five others were arraigned on 8 August, 2008 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a 163-count charge, bordering on abuse of office in the award of over N100 billion contracts when George was the Chairman of the board of NPA. The charge was later reduced to seven.
He was convicted in 2009 by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja and jailed two years alongside others on a seven-count charge of abuse of office and six-month each on another 27-count charge of disobedience to constituted authority.
