Transport Minister Declares Maritime Cup Open

The Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, will declare open the 2011 Ships & Ports Soccer Challenge Soccer Competition tagged “Maritime Cup”.

The two-week tourney, organised by Ships & Ports Communication Company, is expected to kick off on 3 March at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos  State.

The companies  expected to take part in the competition include APM Terminals, Apapa, Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Sifax Group; Lagos Channel Management (LCM), Micura Services Limited; National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Certified Institute of Shipping (CIS), Star Maritime Academy (SMA) and Global Maritime Academy (GMA), Warri.

Others  are Dominion Divine Freight Forwarding Company, Supreme Genius Company; Freight Forwarders Academy of Nigeria (FFAN) and Federal College of Fisheries and Oceanography, Victoria Island, Lagos State.

Coordinator of the competition, Eucharia Okoli,  disclosed that while the opening and closing matches will be played at the Legacy pitch at the National Stadium, the football pitches of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), National Stadium and the Union Bank Sports Complex, Surulere will be used for  other matches.

APM Terminals, Apapa is among the sponsors of this year’s competition. The company  expected to sponsor the Fair Play Award, Sifax Group will sponsor the Most Valuable Player Award, while NAGAFF will sponsor the award for the Highest Goal Scorer.

Other government agencies supporting the competition include Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

The winners of the competition will go home with  the sum of N500, 000, while second and the third positions will pocket the sum of  N300, 000 and N200, 000 respectively.
