Lawmaker Donates Helmets To Okada Riders
A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Oshodi/Isolo II Constituency, Hon. Omowumi Olatunji-Edet has urged operators of commercial motorcycle popularly called Okada to be safety conscious and obey traffic laws always.
Olatunji-Edet who made the call while presenting 200 helmets branded ‘My Choice 2011, Omowumi Olatunji-Edet 4 Assembly’ to the five associations of motorcycle operators in the area said that her action was to drive home the importance of safety while the okada riders ply their trade.
The gesture, which Olatunji-Edet said was long overdue, is meant to extend the same goodwill she earlier extended to market women and students in her constituency to the riders.
According to her: “If I am doing things for schools and students as well as market women, I think the Okada riders too need to be recognised as members of the populace and my constituency; and I have been looking forward to this opportunity.â€
The gift, the lawmaker maintained, is to say thank you to her constituents, especially as another round of elections draw nearer.
While acknowledging that the number of helmets cannot go round all the okada riders, she said that the action was also to thank the people for their support and promised to give out more.
The lawmaker, who has secured her party’s ticket for a second term at the Lagos Assembly, seized the opportunity to appeal to the Association members to vote massively for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) at the forthcoming polls.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the Chairman of Isolo B branch, Comrade Sikiru Daudu thanked the lawmaker for her kind gesture and promised that they would do all in their power to give her and ACN all the necessary support at the polls.
“MOAS is very grateful for the lawmaker’s gesture, we are already in support of ACN
