All Africa Games: Funds Undermine Team Nigeria’s Preparation
Six months to the All African Games in Mozambique, the National Sports Commission, NSC is yet to release funds for sports associations to begin adequate preparations ahead of the Games.
The South West Zone 1 Coordinator of the NSC, Steve Olarinoye, said athletes representing the country at the event need to undergo intensive training programmes to perform well.
According to the former scribe of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, the NSC has not received the funds meant for the preparation of the athletes for the All Africa Games which will come up in September this year.
He said that the authorities would not relent in its efforts to ensure that Team Nigeria record better results at the championship even with the problem of funding militating against their preparation.
Olarinoye said the withdrawal of Wrestling and Power lifting event from the Games would affect the country’s medal haul as he believed that the country have credible power lifters who could win gold medals.
He noted that Nigeria was able to make impact at the last Commonwealth Games in India due to the outstanding performance of Nigerian athletes in wrestling and powerlifting.
He appealed to corporate bodies and sports philanthropists to assist the sports commission to fund sports activities for rapid development.
