Resident Doctors Suspend Strike

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Sunday announced the suspension of its nationwide strike scheduled for March 7.

In a communique issued at the end of its emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Kano on Sunday, the association stated that it had put the strike ”on hold for now.”

In the document which was read by its president, Dr. Nnebue Chinomso, the doctors indicated that the decision was informed by “the assurances” given to it by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) “and the profuse appeal of well-meaning Nigerians.”

The association stated that the gesture was also prompted by its concern for the health of Nigerians.

The body urged government to treat all the issues raised by it which include wage relativity in the health sector and non-payment of Specialist Allowances to Senior Registrars, as a matter of national urgency.

It said it would continue to “watch events carefully and would react in ways deemed fit, should we notice any nuance of insincerity on the part of government.”

NAN reports that some health medical doctors are currently on strike in parts of the country agitating for increased pay.
