Hackney Permit Compulsory For Commercial Vehicles, Okada

The Lagos State government has said that it is compulsory for commercial vehicles and commercial motorcyclists in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, to obtain hackney permits before they can operate in the state.

Commissioner for Transportation, Prof. Bamidele Badejo, said it had come to the attention of government that many commercial vehicles, okada and tricycle owners in state do not have valid hackney permits.

Badejo said this was a gross violation of traffic regulations and punishable.

He noted that such vehicles must have valid license, insurance cover and duly certified as being roadworthy by the Vehicle Inspection Officers, V.I.O, before hackney permit could be issued.

He said commercial vehicle operators needed to obtain permits at the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency’s MVAA Licensing Offices across the State.

The commissioner also advised motorists whose number plates were in bad state to replace them at the Special Number Plate Unit of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.

He said it was a violation of traffic regulation to use plastic or wooden material to rewrite faded, defaced or lost number plates as enforcement agencies have been directed to take action on violators.

Badejo admonished individuals displaying unregistered fancy number plates instead of their registered number to remove such immediately as they constitute a threat to security and safety.

He warned motorists to desist from patronizing touts for their vehicle documents as the government had recently accredited over one 100 Clients’ Representative in the State to assist corporate organizations and individuals who might need their services in obtaining vehicle licenses and other documents from the Agency.
