INEC Staff Protest Non Payment Of Allowance

No fewer than 400 ad hoc staff of INEC, who participated in the last voter registration in Ebonyi, on Monday protested against non payment of their allowances, one month after.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protesters besieged the commission’s office in Abakaliki at 7 a.m. carrying placards with the various inscriptions.

The placards read: “We need our money by hand; “He wants to steal our money; “Prof. Attahiru Jega must hear this,” “Jega should sack REC, INEC.

“He is incompetent;” “EFCC probe REC, Ebonyi state;” “He wants to eat our money.”

The leader of the group, Kenneth Iduma, alleged that INEC paid serving youth corps members who participated in the exercise but refused to do same to them (protesters) since the exercise ended.

“On different occasions, INEC had promised to pay us, yet nothing tangible has resulted from their numerous promises and appeals.

“We did our work perfectly as expected of us, now they have refused to pay us. They paid our colleagues, the serving youth corps members.

“They are telling us, come today, come tomorrow. In fact, we are angry and aggrieved because this is a democratic era.

“Our money is N62,000 each and we are about 400 in number. We are here today, so that they can pay us. We are sending our message to Jega and within five days, he will get our letter.

“We are not saying that the REC should be removed, but if he refuses to pay us our money, let him take anything he sees,” he said.

The Administrative Secretary of INEC in the state, Mr. Peter Nwoko, said the commission had since paid the ad hoc staff the allowances through their banks.

Nwoko added that the matter was under control.
