Team Ikorodu Win Gov’s Boat Race

Athletes from the Ikorodu Local Government were cynosure of all eyes at the maiden Lagos State Governor’s Boat Race Championship as they claimed the first position of the tourney held at the Ijede Waterfront.

The one-day event was organised by the Lagos State Rowing/Canoe and Yachting Association in conjunction with the Office of the Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Raji Fashola headed by Prince Wale Oladunjoye.

Six teams across Lagos State participated in the grassroots sports tourney at the end of which Team Ikorodu won the first position with 7 points and a giant trophy.

In the second position were the team from Ibeju Lekki, who garnered 5 points, while the Ijede Adefarasin team, who garnered 3 points finished third. Other teams that took part in the tourney are Nigerian Navy, Oni Lekki and Iru LGA (Takwa Bay).

A total prize money of N245,000 was given to winners in first three positions of  the twelve events competed for in both male and female categories, while the Chairman of Ijede Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Hon. Hassan Adefarasin, gave the three overall winners the sum of N100,000

The council boss praised  the athletes for their outstanding performance and promised that the  next edition will be glamorous as the council will brand the athletes, venue and boats to be used in the championship.

Prince Oladunjoye thanked Tarzan Company for the use of its jetty for the tournament as well as the people and management of Ijede LCDA for their support.

“I’m impressed with the turn out and the enthusiasm showed by both the athletes and fans. Lagos State government is planning to hold the tournaments across the riverine areas of the state on a regular basis,” he said.

Chairman of the association, Patrick Egbele, representative of the Rowing and Yachting Federation, assistant secretary general Mrs. Irene Obihara and  Technical Director of Lagos State Sports Council, Babatunde Fatai-Williams were among the dignitaries at the event.
