Lagos Bizman Loses N300m To Spiritualists
The police in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, have arrested two brothers who claimed to be spiritualists, Semiu Akorede, 43 and Taofik Akorede, 35, for allegedly duping a Lagos businessman and socialite, Morufu Ajala of the sum of N300 million.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the two brothers were arrested following a conplaint lodged by the victim that the suspects defrauded him of N300 million while pretending that they could heal him of an undisclosed ailment.
The suspects reportedly committed the alleged crime at an office on Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to the police, Semiu and Taofik Akorede confessed to the crime when they were interrogated.
Police thereafter arraigned them before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining money under false pretence contrary to and punishable under Sections 519 and 419 of the Criminal Code, cap 17 vol ii, laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
Count two of the charge reads: “That you Semiu Akorede, 43 and Taofik Akorede, 34 and others still at large did with intent to defraud did obtain the sum of N300 million from Morufu Ajala by false representation that you are in a position to offer him treatment, a representation you all know to be false.â€
When the charge was read to the suspects, they pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Abegunde Davies admitted each of them to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties each in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till 18 April for mention.
But the defendants were ordered to be remanded in prison custody when they could not meet the bail conditions on time.
