The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it will soon take over the registration of SIM cards from all telecommunications companies in the country.
The Executive Chairman of the commission, Dr. Eugene Ikemefuna Juwa, gave this hint recently at the quarterly NCC Consumers’ Parliament held at Lagos Country Club, Ikeja.
While addressing consumers at the forum, Ikemefuna said the commission has concluded plans to take over the registration of SIM cards presently being carried out by telecommuincations companies.
According to Ikemefuna, all those who have already registered their lines with any of the telecommuincations company will not be required to register again as the exercise will only be for those who have not registered.
Although the NCC boss did not diclose when the commissions will start its registration exercise, he said it will last for six months.
He said: “As you know NCC budget was only just approved by the National Assembly in December and so our own registration will start soon . We have already awarded seven contracts for the job and you will soon hear from us on the modalities for the exercise.â€
He commended the telecommunications companies for the success they had recorded so far in the registration exercise but noted that more still needs to be done.
