“Adequate funding, motivation, good equipment and the participation of the populace in security network will help the police in combating crime as well make Nigeria a crime free society.’’

These were the words of Mr. Jide Jimoh, Chairman, Yaba Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, while donating 20 bullet proof jackets to policemen at Sabo and Adekunle stations.

Jimoh noted that the police has its own fair share of bad eggs which has given it a bad image ”but the problem with the police is more fundamental than just a few corrupt officers in the system.”

He identified underfunding, poor equipment as the major problems facing the police, stressing that an average policeman faces danger everyday in the course of combating crime.

He called on the federal government to be alive to its responsibilities by making the police more effective.

‘‘I challenge the federal government to be alive to its responsibilities. For the police to be effective, they must be fully equipped; the officers and men must be well motivated and the populace must be encouraged to participate in security network.

‘‘If the federal authorities are not able to do this, then I am advocating for a state police.’’

The council boss also called on individuals and corporate organizations to join hands with the government in equipping the police. He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to the security of lives and property in the area.

Jimoh urged the policemen to rededicate themselves to duty and shun all forms of malpractices that can tarnish their image and put the lives of the people in jeopardy.
