Prince Lanre Balogun, Lagos State Commissioner for Rural Development, has empowered 200 Ikorodu youths in computer skill acquisition programme.

After undergoing six months computer training in the areas of microsoft package and excel, among others, the youths graduated at the weekend with the best three students receiving computer as gift from the commissioner.

The first phase of the Lanre Balogun Computer Programme had earlier churned out 250 youths last year.

In this year’s graduation, a physically challenged student, Ayokunle Omotoye, 21, emerged the overall best student, while his prowess was a surprise to all as he displayed why he emerged the best student.

Balogun revealed that he started gradually by empowering the youths since last year in computer programme, adding that in the past, some of the youths were given motorcycles to earn a living.

“We introduced the computer training because we realised that computer is the future of our nation, no matter the discipline one engages him of herself. We started gradually and we are moving on.

“What we are doing here today is to give them certificates in computer training while the best three among them will go home with computers,” he said.

On the physically challenged youth who emerged the best student, Balogun said it was a surprise to him and others present at the occasion, adding, “I never knew the overall best student will be a physically challenged youth.

“For that boy to have achieved such feat, it gives us more opportunity to continue with the programme.”

He also disclosed that he would inform the Ministry of Science and Technology to see how the boy could be helped to get into one of the science and technology schools in the state.

Mother of the physically challenged, Mrs. Basirat Omotoye, told Alausa Rhythms that his child had already graduated from the Livingstone College, where he sat for the West African Examination Council (WAEC), but his result is still being withheld by the examination body.

However, the graduating students commended the commissioner for the good gesture.
