Lagos Mobilises 20,000 For Market Carnival
The Lagos State Market Development Board is to mobilise over 20,000 market men and women from the 433 major markets in the state for the Lagos Market Carnival.
The carnival, which is the first of its kind, will hold at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, South West Nigeria, on Wednesday and Thursday.
Deputy Chairman of the Board, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, said all roads would lead to the Police College on the day of the event as it is tailored towards educating market men and women on their responsibilities and contribution to the society.
“The carnival will help them know the challenges facing our market system with the aim of providing lasting solution. It will also afford us the opportunity to appreciate the contribution of market people to the economy and reward them accordingly.
“The carnival will present a meeting point for financial institutions and corporate bodies to discuss ways of partnering in business.
“It will also be an avenue to educate and assist traders on how to get loan facilities from banks and other financial institutions in the country while the corporate bodies can also launch and showcase their products and services to the traders and get direct feedback of what the people think about their services,†she stated.
Tagged The Role of Market Operatives in the Development of Lagos State as a Mega City, the carnival will feature a road show from Ikeja to Surulere, Isolo and Oshodi and back to Ikeja as well as interactive sessions and exhibition.
Govenor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State is expected to declare the event open and interact with the market men and women in order to give them sense of belonging.
Others to grace the carnival include former governor of the state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; wife of the governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Rotimi Agunsoye and his counterparts in Economic Planning and Budget and Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mr. Ben Akabueze and Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire respectively
Also expected to witness the carnival is the Chairman of the State Market Board, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, among others.
“We have ensured that the market men and women comply with the compulsory Thursday environmental sanitation exercise for all market traders and we have told them that it is important they keep the markets clean everyday and not just Thursdays alone,†Tinubu-Ojo added.
