Stakeholders in the transportation sector in Lagos State are set to discuss ways of reducing rate of deterioration of roads in Lagos as part of effort being made by the Public Works Corporation to achieve a pot-hole free Lagos by the end of 2012.
The event is scheduled to hold on Thursday, 24 March at the LSPWC’s Corporate Office along Ogunnusi Road, Ojodu-Berger.
The forum, according to the Public Relations Officer of the corporation, Mr. Samuel Ayetutu, is a critical aspect of the on-going advocacy campaign embarked on by the LSPWC to sensitise members of the public on man-made causes of bad roads in the state.
Issues requiring behavioural change to be put on the front burner include indiscriminate cutting of roads without permission, dumping of refuse in drains, burning of tyres and other items on the roads, cooking on the roads and channelling of domestic waste water to the road but emphasis will be on pouring of petroleum products on the road as well as excess axle load which are key to the transportation sector.
Some of the transport unions expected at the forum include representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) 1, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) 2, Lagos State Taxi Driver and Cab Operators Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), Nigeria Automobile Technician Association (NATA), Three Wheeler Beneficiary / Operator Association of Nigeria as well as Keke Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria.
