We Built 147 Roads In 4 Years —Fashola

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Saturday said that his administration had in less than four years built 147 roads, just as 60 others are at different stages of completion.

He spoke at the open ground of the Lagos State House while addressing thousands of transport workers in the private sector who had participated in a solidarity rally to support his bid to run for a second term in office.

The transport workers comprised members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Owners Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Taxi Drivers and Cab Operators Association, Ajeigboro and Tipper Drivers Association and operators of commercial motorcycles in the state.

The governor, who also said another 44 roads were under construction and rehabilitation, added that the state government was currently developing a light rail system and water transportation scheme as part of the expansion of the transport sector.

The projects, he stressed, would in addition to easing the transportation problems of the society, generate jobs for the people.

Fashola said: “We thank God today; many achievements have been recorded in the state’s transport sector. I promise you that more transformations are on the way.”

The governor said the state administration would soon facilitate the purchase of 1,500 new cars for operators of the state’s traditional taxis to replace the old ones.

The government has so far assisted members of the Taxi Cab Operators Association to buy about 700 new cars as part of measures to phase out the old vehicles. Other corporate operators have been encouraged to join the business.
