Fake Doctor Docked Over N5m Fraud

A fake medical doctor, Mr. Balogun Olawale, 31, a.k.a. Dr. Frank, who specialises in duping unsuspecting women around Sangotedo and Ajah areas of Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, by pretending to treat them of breast cancer-related ailments has been arrested by the police at Ajah Division and arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court with his female accomplice.

The police alleged in the four-count charge that the accused and his accomplice, Florence Nkiruka, 39, were arrested following a complaint lodged by a resident, Mr. Mike Utomi, that the accused defrauded him of N5,168,000 on the pretence of removing breast cancer from his wife.

The police alleged further that the accused confessed to the crime, punishable under Sections 516, 419, 390(9)(6), 484 and 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol. 11, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Counts 1, 2 and 4 read: “That you, Balogun Olawale and Florence Nkiruka between May 2010 and February 2011 at Sangotedo village in Ajah, Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State on the same date, time and place did fraudulently obtain the sum of N5,168,000 from one Mike Utomi under the pretence that his wife has breast cancer, after you falsely presented yourself as Dr. Frank, a medical doctor who specialises in cancer treatment, knowing same to be false.”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and the presiding magistrate granted them bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate also directed that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means of livelihood; produce evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government and must be gainfully employed.

The matter has been adjourned till 5 April, 2011.
